With sun shining brightly, The Storm's Double header was rained out!

Needlessly rained out, even though it stopped raining at least an hour before our first game was to start against Coulas. Broadway will have to wait for another day as well.

Friday August 11th now a Doubleheader

Our latest rained out game has now been rescheduled. It will be game one of a doubleheader on  Friday August 10th at 8pm on K1. Game two, the 9:30pm game will be against Greenthumb (which has changed it's name to Bullocks).

Mother Nature strikes again

The rains came and swept the Storm's game away against The Brew Crew.

Storm stumbles at start; finishes strong

Hanet looked like they had come to play as they scored 6 runs in the top of the first inning. Aside from one error, the rest of their runs were scored on clean singles. If they kept finding the holes throughout the game, it would be a problem. Unfortunately for Hanet, their hits didn’t find the holes the rest of the game, and Storm’s defense was rock solid the rest of the game, and Hanet was only able to manage one more run for the rest of the game.

It wasn’t a runaway, though. Storm’s offense was not running on full cylinders. The first inning was pretty good. Jeff led off with a single and Lance followed that up with a towering home run. Bob then thought that, since he was playing shortstop like Joey usually does, he would hit like Joey usually does, and knocked a solo home run. Storm would add another run.

The 2^nd inning wasn’t kind to Storm and they added nothing and trailed 7-4. In the 3^rd, Storm scored a couple to draw within one, and the 4^th saw the top of the order leading off so it looked like Storm would take the lead. However, the top of the order went down one, two, three, leaving Hanet still on top. In the 5^th, just to prove a point, Duran knocked a solo home run that tied the game and really screamed, “someone should have been on base!” Storm took the lead in the bottom of the 5^th.

The 6^th and 7^th resembled a late inning hard ball game rather than a slo-pitch game, as neither team was able to score a run. The game ended in dramatic fashion as Hanet had runners on the corners with two outs. The last batter grounded out to 2^nd to end the game. The runner on 3^rd potentially had a chance to score from 2^nd on the previous hit, but was held. It would have been interesting to see what would have happened had he been sent home.

Hanet and Storm played yet another close game this year, with Storm coming out on top in all of them so far!

Mother Nature takes out the Storm

Big difference from last year, but still the same result. The rain wiped out this game against Greenthumb.

A’s come from behind

The A’s and Storm played a very tightly contested game. It was close all throughout. Storm had a lead going into the bottom of the seventh, but Manos hit a walk-off grand slam, and the A’s won 17-13. Of course, whoever had the scoresheet for Storm was so upset about this, that this was not marked. None of those runs were scored, so on Storm’s scoresheet, the final score is 13-13. However, Storm was not the home team, and therefore not the official scoresheet, so we’re pretty sure the A’s marked the grand slam and submitted the correct official score of 17-13.

The game was well-played on defense, and Storm and A’s traded runs throughout the game. After four innings, the game was locked at 5-5. Both teams were playing solid defense, and it didn’t look like either team was going to give anything. In the top of the 6^th, however, it looked like Storm got the break they needed. Bob hit a fly ball that fell between two A’s players due to miscommunication. Duran then clocked a three-run homer, and Joey did what he does best, hit a solo home run. Storm had a six run inning, which almost matched the total number of runs they had for the game.

In the 7^th inning, both teams had the bottom two and then top due up. Storm’s top didn’t do anything when the lineup turned over. The A’s bottom two both got on, and the A’s top came through with three singles, followed by an intentional walk, and then a rand slam. The A’s top two batters had been held hit-less until the 7^th inning. Timely hitting for the A’s came through and their incredible season continues.

8 Men In

 Storm had a short bench of only 8 people, but when you have the right combination of 8 (and most Storm combinations of 8 would be pretty good), things might not go too badly.

In a lineup of 8 people that means your best hitters, if they’re there, will be hitting a lot. Storm’s top 5 batters in the batting order have been hot. Their batting averages across the last 5 games range from .741 -.885. Kenny was batting second last, and his season batting average is .708. That says something about the depth of the lineup, and when the lineup is only 8 batters deep, some serious damage can be done.

The damage started getting done early. The first inning saw 8 consecutive hits produce 7 runs, and the only out recorded was a runner being thrown out at the plate. Storm would go on to score 9 in the inning.

The 2^nd inning did not go nearly as well for Storm. Storm batters saw a lot of pitches, but was put down in order.

The 3^rd inning is where things really came off the rails for the Falcons. Starting at the top of the lineup, Storm recorded 14 consecutive hits that produced 13 runs. The only negative in the inning was Joey selfishly hitting a solo home run. It came back to bite him in the ass later that SAME INNING, as he came to the plate with the bases loaded, and was forced to settle for a 3 RBI triple. Wait, that doesn’t sound so bad.

Anyway, Storm cruised along to a 28-3 inning.

Fun Facts: Storm scored 28 runs, but was held scoreless in three innings, including two innings in which Storm went three up three down. As a matter of fact, if you removed the 1^st and 3^rd inning from the game, it was only a 6-3 game. Those two innings caused a lot of damage.

Cycle Watch: Joey might get some votes for Most Sportsmalike player. After hitting a home run, triple and single, Joey had four plate appearances to try to hit the double, and he likely could have done it. But Storm was going station to station by that point, and he never pushed it even though he hit the ball pretty hard two of those times.

Storm win by default over SI Play

With an early 5:00 pm start on a beautiful sunny Sunday, Sports Illustrated Play was unable to field a team for today's game. As a result Storm was able to start their pool party earlier than originally scheduled.

Storm washes over Rebels

 The Rebels gave Storm a good run for their money through the first three innings. Rebels came out swinging. After Storm put up 10 in the first inning, and thought they might sail to a victory, Rebels scored 5 in the top of the 2^nd, to pull within 4 runs. Storm thought they had put the Rebels down with a 7 run 2^nd, but in the top of the 3^rd, the Rebels scored 6 more including a grand slam. This brought the score to 17-12. A very close game. Then Storm kept hitting, scoring 7 more in the 3^rd, and the Rebels ran out of steam and were unable to score again. Storm shifted to base to base, but still kept finding holes and ended up scoring 41 runs.

Single Game Records:  Bob had a night for the record books. He tied the record for hits in a game (7), for doubles in a game (3), and set the record for runs in a game (7). He had a chance to break the record for hits in a game, but Dave got really sportsmanlike, and when Jeff hit a ground ball to 3^rd Dave started walking to 2^nd and actually called for the Rebels to throw the 2^nd to get him out and end the game. This happened with Bob standing in the on-deck circle with seven hits, and then sadly walking back to the dugout with no opportunity to stand alone in the record books. As it is, he is one of four Storm players to have 7 hits in a single game (Duran, Joey, and Jeff being the other three). There is also a conspiracy theory that Jeff hit a ground ball intentionally to give the Rebels the opportunity to end the game with a double play. Jeff denies this vehemently.

Cycle Watch:  In a game with 41 runs scored on 49 hits, you’d think someone would have hit for the cycle. Many players were close, but none were able to do it. Joey, Jeff, and Dave were triples short of the cycle; Bob was a home run short of the cycle (likely because Storm played most of the game +2 [it seems the team and league rules were all conspiring to diminish Bob who was in the midst of one of the greatest games in slo-pitch history!])

Home Run Productivity:  In a game with a final score such as this, it doesn’t matter, but Storm needs to be more productive with their home runs. Rebels hit one home run for four runs. Storm hit four home runs for four runs (two solos, a two-run, and a home run out).

Two Outs in One Inning:  Sometimes, when the team is hitting well, one player has a bad game, or sometimes even just a bad inning and makes two outs in a single frame. Usually this is the 1^st and 3^rd out of the inning; however, yesterday something even harder to accomplish happened. Brian actually made the 2^nd and 3^rd outs of the 2^nd inning.
