Storm grounds Falcons

Storm apparently thought it was baseball, not slo-pitch, and only had nine players show up. The Falcons provided a catcher, who even made a play at home plate (thanks!). With Craig, Duran, and Rene out, Storm was down 25 combined home runs for the game and about 50+ home run outs. The power shortage wasn’t noticed as Bob and Al took up the mantle and would provide both home runs and  home run outs. Storm would put multiple runs up in every inning and played very good defense on the way to defeating the Falcons 22-16. It was quite the upset as Storm is currently ranked 12^th in the league’s most respected power rankings and the Falcons are ranked 4^th. For their part, the Falcons had eleven players show up and managed not to have anyone/everyone ejected from the game even though there were a number of close plays on the base paths.

Defensive Highlights:

Bob, who was back at 2^nd after spending most of the last few seasons in the outfield, decided to make some unconventional plays. The most unconventional was a ball that bounced off his chest. He made sure that he’d angled his body enough that he was able to deflect the ball to Joey. Joey tried to pick it up but bobbled it. As he did, the Falcons runner reached second, but couldn’t stop his momentum, and Joey got control of the ball in time to tag the runner whose foot was off the base.

Brian made a nice single-handed doubleplay where he tagged the runner at first and then stepped on first.

Greg made a beautiful running catch that looked like he was going to drop into one of his famous rolls, but we haven’t seen one of those in a while.

Lance also made a running catch where his glove was just long enough as he reached down and caught the ball.

Kevin caught everyone by surprise by playing halfway when Ash batted a ball to the opposite direction and made a beautiful catch.

Joey ended the game on a doubleplay where he threw the ball so hard that we thought Brian might not actually be able to get the ball out of his glove.

Offensive Highlights:

Without Duran, Craig, and Rene there hitting all the home runs, some other Storm players had the chance to knock a few. Bob decided to really take up the mantle of those missing players as he hit a solo shot, and then hit a massive home run out.

Al decided that without his son-in-law there, he would pick up the slack. Al hit a massive three-run home run, but he also was Storm’s final out of the game on an incredibly hard line drive home run over the fence.

Jeff hit a three-run home run.            

After hitting a ball to the fence earlier in his previous at bat, Kevin knocked one out (right after asking if we had any home runs to hit). He has proven that Tinky-too has some pop, which means it’s useless to the team when +2.

Offensive Hilarity:

With two outs a short pop fly was hit to right field. Greg decided he didn’t want to run too hard, just in case it was caught and Jeff caught up to him at 2^nd. Then, when the ball dropped, Greg ran to 3^rd. When Jeff saw Brian send Greg home Jeff ran to 3^rd. Brian then sent Jeff home even though the 2^nd basemen had the ball. Jeff then raced Greg home and could have stolen the wallet out of his back pocket they were so close. Luckily, the throw was offline and they were both safe.

Offensive Not So Highlights:

Kenny lived up to his first initial, and struck out looking at three straight pitches, thinking the final one was illegal. Later in the game, Brian decided to strike out to make Kenny feel less bad about what had happened to him.

Cycle Watch:

Jeff missed the triple, which is unfortunate as he hit two triples the previous game, but you can’t carry them over!

Bob also missed the triple. This would have been much more productive than that home run out!

Kevin also missed the triple.
