POS takes it all in Oshawa

POS was looking to get an early jump on the 2013 season by playing an SPN qualifier in Oshawa over the weekend.  Playing in the Men’s 35E+ Division POS started the weekend with an early Saturday morning game at 8am on diamond #4 against Half Cut.  It was a cold morning with the temperature around zero and the sun shining through the infield/outfield from behind home plate made fielding a challenge but POS took the opening game with a score of 8-5 with Bob singling in the top of the 7th to score 2 runs and give POS the cushion heading into the bottom of the inning.

Game 2 also on diamond #4 was at 10:30am and it was a little warmer and the sun was a little higher.  The opposition in this was There’s Always Time which had some players from the Coulas Bone Crushers in the WMSPL.  With Luke from the Bone Crushers pitching, POS was very familiar with him but could not solve him early on in the game and found themselves trailing 8-5 heading into the bottom of the 7th.  Queue the comeback as POS scored 3 runs to tie the game and with 2 outs Bob smacked a triple to the gap in right to score Mike from first to win the game.

Game 3 on diamond #3 at 3:30pm had the 2-0 POS taking on the 0-2 Black Listed team in the final game of the round robin.  The weather was cloudy and a few innings had a sleet/hail mixture.  POS had a few good innings and ending up taking this game by a 15-10 score and clinching first place after the round robin.  This meant a re-match again Black Listed on Sunday while the other 2 teams played in the other semi-final.

Sunday’s semi-final game started at 12pm on diamond #4 and after a night of rainfall there were some rather large puddles in the infield to contend with.  SPN changed the format due to the threatening weather and had batters starting with a 1-1 count to try and speed up the games.  POS came out swinging taking an early 4-0 lead after the 1st inning.  Defense was solid only giving up 1 run and heading into the bottom of the 6th had a chance to win this one by the 10-run mercy rule…Bob hit a single to score Mike from 3rd and give POS the 11-1 win.  POS was heading to the finals in a re-match against There’s Always Time.

Sunday’s final was also on diamond #4 at 2:30pm with the sun actually trying to peak through the clouds at times and the infield had dried up a little.  Since the weather had improved SPN removed the starting 1-1 count on the batters for the final.  With Luke not pitching for this game POS jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the 1st but There’s Always Time responded in the 2nd with a 5-spot and was leading after 3 innings by that 5-2 margin.  POS batted around in the 4th scoring 4 runs to take the lead and then followed that up with a 6-run mercy in the 5th.  POS gave up a few runs making the game closer but it was a 2-run dinger by Bob in the 6th that put this game out of reach giving POS the championship with the 16-9 win.  It was a great weekend for POS going a perfect 5-0 and a great way to finish off the 2012 season.  Looking forward to another great WMSPL Season and POS Tournaments in 2013!

Sad ending to a great season

As in past years, specifically the last two years, the Storm once again fall to Xtreme in the playoff's. Xtreme started out really strong putting up 17 runs after only 3 innings. The Storm could not answer, as most of the bats were silent for this game.

Final Score: Xtreme Contracting 19 - Storm 7

Off to the Semi's

With the way the re-seeding went we played Direct Elevator again, fortunately for us we also had the same result, thanks in large part to a 7 run first inning offensive outburst. In the third inning Duran hit a grand-slam HR that gave the Storm a commanding lead. However in the 5th inning Direct answered back with 4 runs, but the Storm were able to keep Direct off the score board for the remainder of the game.

Final Score: Storm 12 - Direct Elevator 5

2012 Signage Source Storm

2 Down, 3 to go....

The Storm had a 4 run lead after 1 inning and never looked back, this game was kept close throughout but the Storm always seemed to have an answer for Directs offence.

Final score: Storm 11 and Direct Elevator 8

Game 1 done

The Storm and Mayhem played a close game for  4 innings, but in the bottom of the 5th inning Al belted a Grand-slam HR to break this one open and in the end the Storm defeated Mayhem 14 to 7.

Elimination Rounds

Storm end season on winning note.

The bats were out in force last night racking up 25 runs. It was a solid end to a great year. The Storm ended up with 28 wins and only 8 losses, plus 2 ties. Good enough for a 2 place finish overall and first in the Vice Presidents Division.

Next up.....The Playoff's

Close game results in a tie

Good game last night, but the Storm could not hold onto the lead they built. Coulas scored 5 runs in the 6th inning to tie the game, and each team scored one in the 7th to keep it tied, Bob had the Storm's only HR and it was an inside the park one. Coulas belted out 4HR's, thankfully only two counted. Make the final 12 to 12.

Provincials in Niagara Falls 2012

The 2012 SPN Provincials (Masters 35+) were in Niagara Falls on Labour Day Weekend and POS qualified for the tournament by playing in the Scarborough and Oshawa tournaments.  Game 1 was a Friday afternoon game at 2:30 against the Mushballers on JAP#2 diamond.  With gale force winds blowing in from left centre field and the outfield “concrete” grass (or I guess it should be called “brown stuff”) it made for an interesting game.  POS started off slow and found themselves down 10-5 heading into the top of the 7th when the bats came alive and racked up 6 runs to take the lead heading into the bottom of the 7th.  However, the Mushballers had some quick hits and after tying it up they had the bases loaded with no outs and won the game 12-11 with a single to left.

Game 2 was an early morning 9am match at the new Headquarters in Chippawa on diamond PC#5.  POS faced the Generals who had also lost their Friday game.  The game was close early on until the Generals had a big 6 run inning which POS could not answer and ended up losing this one 13-8.

Game 3 was also at HQ on PC#3 at 1:30 against Byng Boyz who were also 0-2.  This was a must win game for both teams if they wanted to guarantee the chance to play in Sunday’s elimination games.  The tournament had 18 teams with the top 16 teams advancing to Sunday.  POS started this game off strong scoring the mercy 6 runs in the top of the 1st and continuing to score runs and play solid defense to end up taking this one 17-0 after a 5-inning mercy.  Now, it was off to the arena to see who/when POS played on Sunday.  POS finished with a 1-2 (+1) record which was the best of the teams with the 1-2 record and placed them 11th to face the 6th place team on Sunday.

Game 4 was a bright and early 8:30am start back at JAP on diamond #1 this time.  POS was taking on the 6th place Town & Country A’s who they had faced last year on this same diamond in the Saturday round robin game.  Although the winds were calm the game was delayed a bit at the start due to the fog but once it lifted POS was looking for a better outcome then what they had against the A’s last year.  The game was low scoring early on but the A’s had some key hits and after putting up a 6 run mercy POS found themselves down 14-5 heading into the 7th and could not pull off a dramatic comeback this time.

POS had a great time over the weekend and will look to improve on their 10th place Provincials finish in 2013.  Click to see the 2012 SPN Final Standings .  Next up for POS is the Oshawa SPN tourney in October which will count towards the qualifying for the 2013 Provincials.

Doubling down

Great hitting, great pitching, and descent fielding lead the Storm to their 27th victory of the year. The Storm hit 7 doubles and 2 Home runs to power past Direct Elevator to hold onto top spot overall.

Monday, August 27, 2012

Ouch !!

Not a great result for the Storm last night. The Storm built up a 11 to 3 lead, but in the bottom of the sixth inning Bradley scored 9 unanswered runs to defeat the Storm 12 to 11. This game had the Storm belting out 6 HR's but because of the +2 rule, only 3 counted, we could have used Joey's grand-slam as it turns out.

Solid at the plate

Last night was one of those nights where it seemed that every time a Storm player would come to the plate they were going to hit the ball hard and more often than not find a hole somewhere. The Storm hit 4 HR's even though only two counted, in the end the Storm belted out 19 singles, 4 doubles, 3 Triples, and 4 HR's for a total of 30 Hits on route to a 22 to 11 victory over Xtreme Contracting.

Storm love Doubleheader's in 2012

For the 4th time in this 2012 season the Storm took both ends of a double header, this time thanks to 3 huge innings scoring 8 runs in the first and fourth innings, then adding 9 more in the 6th inning. This one was close for a while, but in the end the Storm defeated the A's 26 to 13.

Solid Victory, Clinches VP Division Title

The Storm and Rebels played a typical game that seems to be the new normal when these two teams meet. A close game, with good defense and good pitching. The only difference in this game was a 5 run 5th inning for the Storm that the Rebels were unable to answer.

Final Score Storm 12 - Rebels 5

Tuesday, August 14, 2012

What a comeback !

Last night had the Devils and Storm playing a good game for the first few innings, but in the top of the 4th inning the Devils hammered the Storm scoring 11 runs and taking a commanding 16 to 3 lead. But cue the comeback in the bottom of the 5th the Storm batted around twice scoring a whopping 15 runs to retake the lead 18 to 16. The sixth inning remained scoreless but in the seventh the Devils scored two more to tie the game at 18. So with last bats the Storm got their first two runners on base and Greg hit a screaming liner to the fence to walk off this victory for the Storm. Make the final Storm 19 and devils 18.

Mike so close to a shutout

Mike was on the mark yesterday, the A's I think had a guy on Third twice and second twice, but it took them to the top of the seventh inning to finally push a run across the plate. The Storm managed to put up runs in every inning on way to a 16 to 1 victory.

POS comes up short in Oshawa

POS headed into Oshawa to play their second qualifier for Niagara and looked very good on Saturday with timely offense and solid defense.  In their 3 round robin games they won all of them with only giving up a total of 5 runs with scores of 11-1, 8-3, and 14-1.  This 3-0 record with the +19 run differential (max 7 per game) had POS seeded #1 out of the 20 teams and ahead of the other 3-0 teams.

Sunday morning had POS taking on the Hot Toddy’s (no relation to Todd) who were the winners of the 8th vs 9th game and with them having just played they seemed ready from the start and put POS in a hole early and they never seemed to gain enough momentum to take the lead away.  Make the final 16-11.  All top 4 seeded teams from Saturday lost their quarterfinal game so something must have been in the air on Sunday morning.  A great time was had by all and next up for POS is Provincials in Niagara at the end of the month.

POS Roster for the Tournament:
Wayne Cosby (Greenthumb/Woodland) – Coach/Sub
George Douma (A’s) – Coach/Sub
Todd Boisvert (Greenthumb/Woodland)
David Hatt (Greenthumb/Woodland)
Paul Power (Greenthumb/Woodland)
Al Stanfield (Storm)
Bob Peppler (Storm)
Joey Pilkey (Storm)
Ashley Teeter (Falcons)
Cas Litwin (Falcons)
Jeff Hutchinson (Bradley Motors Shifters)
Derek Ackford (Xtreme Contracting)
Andrew Ashbee (Xtreme Contracting)
Cameron Dunnett (St. Louis Devils)
Justin Dunnett (A’s)

You take it, no you take it.

It was a typical game against Direct Elevator again last night. One team would take the lead the other team would come right back and take it away. It seems when these two teams play it will come down to the last out and that is exactly what happened last night. The Storm had a 3 run lead entering the bottom of the 7th. But Direct Elevator was able to push 3 runs across the plate before the Storm was able to record the final out. This one ends in a 19 to 19 draw.

Quick Start Leads to Win

The Storm took the lead with a 12-run 1st and responded to a Falcon comeback attempt with an 8-run 5th.
Final score:  Storm 24, Falcons 11.

Storm Show Up

With several players from both Greenthumb and the Storm away at a POS tournament, the Storm were still able to meet the minimum requirement to field a team.  Greenthumb could not, so the Storm came away with a default victory. Storm win 7 to 0 in the default.

POS takes it all in Uxbridge

POS was looking to improve on their runner-up finish in Scarborough at the beginning of June and headed to Uxbridge to play in the 19th Annual NSA Diamond Duster Tournament.  Playing in the REC “E” Division POS started the tourney with a win on Friday night at the Arena against an Uxbridge team (Victorious Secrets) scoring 10 runs in the top of the 7th to put this game out of reach and take it 26-9.

Saturday at noon was on an interesting diamond (Goodwood#1) with trees, rock, road, and light standards in the OF where POS took on a team from Ajax (Killer Instincts) and again put this one out of reach in the top of the 7th scoring 7 runs to take this one 18-9.  The 4:40 game on Saturday was back at HQ against another local Uxbridge team (Rookies) where we should’ve been keeping track of K’s as Al must have K’d at least 7 Rookies in the game as POS took this one in convincing fashion 15-4.  The late game on Saturday was based on standings within Pod A and with 2 teams being tied 3-0 POS had the run differential advantage (+37) over The Replacements (+35) from Oshawa heading into the 1vs2 matchup to determine the winner of Pod A.  The 7:55 game at HQ was an exciting back and forth battle between POS and The Replacements which saw POS come out on top 16-13.  At the end of the Round Robin POS was 4-0 with a +40 which gave them the edge over another 4-0 team in Pod C (Silverbacks) who were +30.  This gave POS the #1 seed out of the 18 teams heading into Sunday’s elimination games.

Sunday’s 11:05 game at HQ had POS taking on the winner of the 16vs17 game who ended up being the Rookies again and having to play back-to-back games proved to be too much for the Rookies as POS took this one easily 15-3 after a 5 inning mercy. The 1:15 game back at the Arena saw POS taking on the #9 seed Team Sox from Oshawa and in a very close game POS hung on to take this one 9-7 stranding the tying run on 2nd in the bottom of the 7th.  The semi-final game, 4:30 at the Arena saw a return of the Killer Instincts who were seeded 12th but had knocked off the 5th and 4th seeds for the rematch against POS.  The rest between games for POS was nice to have but the bats also seemed to be continuing their rest into the game as POS found themselves down 7-2 heading into the top of the 7th.  With most of the POS players scheduled to play in the league games at 6:30 there were thoughts about making it back in time for those games…however, queue the comeback and with some timely hits POS rallied to score 5 runs to tie the game heading into the bottom of the 7th.  POS shutdown the Sox in the bottom of the 7th and headed to extra innings with Derek starting at 2nd base with the 1 out.  Jeremy singled to right and Derek scored easily for POS to take the lead by 1 run.  The bottom of the 8th saw the Sox runner at 2nd base make a running mistake on a grounder to Joey at SS which caused him to be tagged out and with 2 out they had another hit but ended the game with a flyout to Dave in RF.  POS was heading to the finals with the dramatic come from behind extra inning 8-7 win…and emails back to the teams in Whitby letting them know that they would not be back in time for those 6:30 games.  The 6:40 Finals at HQ had POS taking on The Dillos (#6 seed) from Scarborough who had knocked off the #3 seed (The Replacements) by a default in the quarters and the #2 seed (Silverbacks) 7-5 in their semis.  The Dillos were experiencing their first finals and as POS jumped out to an early lead it proved to be too much for The Dillos to mount a comeback as timely hits, great base running and defense by POS allowed them to take this one 13-4 and become the 2012 Diamond Duster REC E Champs going a perfect 8-0.  It was a great weekend had by all and POS is looking forward to the next tourney in August.

A summary of the games:
Friday, 9:30pm, Arena, POS-26 vs Victorious Secrets-9
Saturday, 12:20pm, Goodwood#1, POS-18 vs Killer Instincts-9
Saturday, 4:40pm, HQ W, POS-15 vs Rookies-4

Another tough loss

The Storm could not hold onto the lead in this game that had 6 home-runs three by each team. Xtreme scored 4 in the bottom of the 7th to take this one by one run. On a side note Aaron now holds a Storm record, with his 6th strikeout of the season.

Final Score Xtreme 17 - Storm 16

Monday, July 23, 2012

Nice all round win !!

The pitching was great, the hitting was good and the fielding was good enough for the Storm to take this one against Mayhem. Final Score 12 to 6, and that's with giving up 4 unearned runs in the 7th inning

Thursday, July 19, 2012

How Many?

The base running clinic put on by Greg and The Rookies led to 4 runners getting thrown out at 3rd base (2 of them the first out of an inning).  Honorable mention goes to Brad's attempt at making it 5, but getting thrown out at first instead.
We ran ourselves out of too many innings, letting Direct hang around just long enough to come back and win the game in the bottom of the 7th.
Final score:  Direct 10, Storm 9.

Statleaders Update

UPDATE !  Statleaders is now working again

Some of you may have noticed Statleaders.com has not been working for the last few days.

Message from Statleaders
Yes, we’ve had some ISP issues that started a few days ago.  They have not yet been resolved but I’m hoping to have resolution tonight.  It’s a very frustrating exercise…

Rest assured your data is safe.  Sorry for the inconvenience.

Offensive Explosion !!

For the first time in a long time the Storm managed to put some hits together and score some runs. An 11 run first inning is a good cure for the slumping hitters on the Storm. Final score Storm 24 - Bradley 7.

Storm scores more than 4 Runs !!!!

Another low scoring game, but we did manage to break the four run mark for the first time in 4 games. Final score 7 to 2.

Friday, July 13, 2012

Unlucky number 4

Still no clutch hitting, hell no hitting at all hurts the Storm again. We are not going to win many games with our current run production. Four straight games scoring 4 or fewer runs

Monday, July 9, 2012

Another Low Scoring Game

The bats have been quite quiet for three games now, however with good pitching and quality defense we we able to hold the A's to only one run, and when you do that you usually win. So with a final score of 4 to 1 the Storm defeated the A's in a very quick and quiet manner.

No Timely Hitting

This was a close low scoring affair until the 5th inning when The Rebels put up 5 unanswered runs to take this one by a score of 10 to 4.

Tuesday, July 3, 2012

Can't win them all !!!

Thirteen hits just won't do in Softball, and that all the Storm could muster up last night. The Devil's didn't do all that much better for most of the game, but did score 4 runs in the 7th inning to take a commanding lead. The Devil's won this one 9 to 3.

Tuesday, June 26, 2012

June proves to be great month for the Storm

Thanks to a great team effort last night the Storm sent 63 batters to the plate and belted out 40 hits including 2 doubles, and 4 Hr's even though two counted as walks. Fielding was good if not entertaining ( you're welcome). All in all June provided the Storm with 9 wins and only 1 loss. Nice start to the season, let's see if we can keep it going. The final score in this game was Storm 29 and Falcon's 2.

Monday, June 25, 2012

Let it rain, let it rain, let it Rain !!!!

This game started in a light rain, and ended in heavy rain. The best part of this game is at least we won, this was a very close game with only one run separating the two teams at any time. Final score Storm 6 Greenthumb 5

Wednesday, June 20, 2012

Al pop's three dingers !

Another close game last night right up to the last inning when the Storm scored 4 runs in the bottom of the sixth to double their lead over Hanet. Al ate his Wheaties for this game and belted out 3 HR's. Final score in this one was Storm 12 and Hanet 6

Monday, June 18, 2012

The Bats were out last night !!!

The first few innings were close, then the Storm's bats opened up in a big way. We put up 17 runs in the 4th inning sending 23 batters to the plate, we scored all these runs without a home run in that inning. After that it was base to base for the most part and in the end the Storm defeated Mayhem 24 to 4.

Saturday, June 16, 2012

Close Game until the bottom of the 6th

The Storm played their fastest game of the year last night in a very close game with Bradley Motors. For 5 innings this game was not separated by more than 2 runs. Then Al steps up and say's " Guy's I want an eight run cushion for the 7th inning" so that's what we did, we added 4 more runs in the bottom of the 6th to give Al his 8 run cushion. Final score in this one was Storm 10 & Bradley 2 in a game that only took 50 minutes to play.

Friday, June 15, 2012

Strong finish for the Storm

The Storm and Coulas played a very good game on Wednesday night. It was a back and forth affair throughout the game. But thanks to a 5 run seventh inning by the Storm, they were able to pull out the victory. The final score was Storm 15 and Coulas 9

Monday, June 11, 2012

Storm take both ends of the Doubleheader

A's got out to a Three to nothing lead after one inning, but in the second inning the Storm blew this game wide open thanks in large part to 9 walks in the inning. The Storm sent 20 batters to the plate and in the end scored 15 runs and never looked back. Although with some experimental pitching by Brad in the 6th inning the A's put up 9 runs of there own. Needless to say the Brad pitching experiment might be over. Brad is a one inning relief pitcher only. Final in this was 24 to 13

Storm win game one!

Back to Back homers in the first allowed the Storm to get out to an early lead that they never relinquished. It was a close game but the Storm brought just enough to pace them to a 13 to 9 victory over the Rebels.

Tuesday, June 5, 2012

Storm lose to Falcons in a close one

One of the closest games of the year, but in the end the Falcon's answered our mid inning rally with 4 runs of their own. Final Score Falcons 8, Storm 4.

Monday, June 4, 2012

Just enough to get the win

This game played out like so many others this year. Greenthumb gets out to an early lead, then the Storm claws it's way back and eventually takes and keeps the lead. This was a nice team victory. Storm 10, and Greenthumb 7

Thursday, May 31, 2012

Six and counting...

The Storm showed some true grit as Hanet came out of the gate strong and put up 5 early runs, but the Storm kept chipping back and in the end manged to total 18 runs while only allowing three more in the remaining 6 innings. Make the final Storm 18 - Hanet 8.

Monday, May 28, 2012

Nice!

This game was close throughout, but in the end the Storm scored 2 runs that Mayhem could not answer. Make the final 10 to 8 for the Storm
