Mother Nature 5, Storm 3

The WMSPL received notification from the Town of Whitby that due to the field conditions after the rain last night and today, the fields have been closed and permits pulled for tonight's (Tuesday) games.

Once the game gets rescheduled, I will update the calendar, drink schedule and Sign-out page.

WMSPL Tournament Information

Rules
Regular season rules apply with the following exceptions:
- home team determined by a coin toss
- if the pitcher gets hit by a batted ball without the chance to field the ball, the batter will be called out and it will be a
dead ball situation. It will be at the umpire's discretion whether the pitcher has a chance to field the ball.

To determine standings:
- Standings will be determined on a point basis with a team awarded two points for a win, one point for a tie, and zero points for a loss.  Round Robin games may end in a tie if curfew or 7 innings reached.
- In the event of a tie, standings shall be determined based on:
   * Team with the best record during games between the teams concerned

   * Team with the fewest runs allowed.
   * Team with the best run differential (max 7 per game).

Storm victorious over Broadway

For the third consecutive game Storm struggled out of the gate, but turned it around in a major way in the 3rd inning, en route to a 19-9 victory. The first inning saw some holes in the defense, as a pop-up landed harmlessly between 1st and 2nd as nobody seemed to want to go catch it. Some other balls got through, that normally wouldn’t and Broadway was up 2-0. Storm didn’t do much at the plate in the 1st. Only four batters went up and Duran got an uncharacteristic strikeout. In the 2nd the bats warmed up a little. A few singles produced three runs. It was the 4th where things started to heat up. Brian started it with a single, and Storm was able to string together a few hits including some extra base hits for a four run inning. The team never looked back from there offensively. Defensively, the team also picked up with some nice plays including two double plays and two great catches on line drives by Duran and Brian. Craig seems to have figured the league out. He hit a home run in his third consecutive game. Thankfully this time there were runners on! Storm seemed to have some trouble with contact. There were three strikeouts in the game. Duran, Bob, and Mike all struck out. Bob went hit-less, ending his hit and reached base streaks.

Storm Surge in 3rd

After a slow start in the first two innings, Storm trailed 5-3 when they came up in the bottom of the 3rd. Jeff, Duran, and Bob hit consecutive doubles then Craig hit a triple that he tried to turn into a home run. Thankfully, daddy in law was there to put the reins on him as the ball was literally beside him. Five more consecutive hits followed, and Storm had suddenly put up eight runs.
That was all Storm would need, but they didn’t stop there. Storm put up six more runs in the 4th highlighted by a rare triple from Al. Rene hit a 3-run homer in the 5th to cap off a 4 run inning, and then, after announcing to the team that it was time to start going base to base, Duran pulled a Joey and launched a towering three-run home run. Craig has clearly chosen Duran as his role model. He first demonstrated it earlier in the game with his unwillingness to stop while running the bases, and then demonstrated it in the 6th when, after Duran hit his towering home run, Craig thought, why not, and launched a massive solo home run. Yes, that’s right. You read that correctly. Craig hit a solo home run for the SECOND CONSECUTIVE GAME. He must really like grilling. Or be scared of the water. He might never see the pool at the team barbecues.

Highlights: Duran hit four doubles, and then told everyone base to base, which meant he couldn’t hit another double, so he hit a home run. He scored four runs and drove in four. Rene and Craig were both one hit short of the cycle. Craig missed the double and Rene missed the triple. Lance got two doubles, scored four runs and got four RBI.

HR's: Rene, Craig, Duran

Storm starts slow, finishes strong

The orange on the fancy new jerseys Brad chose for the team wasn’t the only orange on Storm last night. The rust on the infield defense was clearly visible. A number of balls got through infielders that normally would have been played. It got so bad that Brad quipped from the bench that the other team’s strategy was to, “hit it straight at ‘em.” Of course, when Brad stepped out to play 2nd base, the baseball gods/karma got him back, because the first ball went straight through his legs.
After three innings, Storm was down 5-1. In the 5th inning, Storm remembered how to play baseball on both sides of the ball. Brad made a great play running back, losing the ball, and then throwing his glove up and having the ball land in it. Then everyone else seemed to remember how to play defense. Storm did not give up a run after the 4th inning.
The bats woke up as well as Storm put up 4 in the 4th and 10 in the 5th including a three run homer by Joey.

The New Guys

The new guys are pretty good, but they need to learn the ropes. They BOTH hit solo home runs. In a league with a home run rule, that’s not productive. The issue was exacerbated later in the game as Duran hit a three-run home run OUT. This is not unusual, but is frustrating coming later in an inning that saw a solo shot. Craig was a triple short of the cycle and Rene hit for extra bases every at bat, so they might have potential.

TSN Report on The Storm

Well, with all the turnover this year with James and Chris officially leaving and then adding Craig and Rene to the roster, things appear to be on track for another great year. TSN caught wind of the story and has reported about it on air the other day.

It was also pointed out that the 2019 Storm may be the oldest team in the Whitby Men's Slopitch League this season, but with that goes the most experience as well. We will be leaning heavy on our new younger players this season.

Mother Nature 2, Storm 0

Soggy diamonds and more rain in the forecast has forced the Town of Whitby to pull the permits for the opening weekend of the 2019 Whitby Men's Slopitch League. Hopefully the fields will be in better shape for our game scheduled on Monday.
