Storm’s bats surge!

After giving up a two run home run to the second Surge bater, Storm shut down Surge in the top of the 1st, and then surged ahead in the bottom of the inning. Duran singled and then Rene hit it off the end of the bat and… over the fence.  Lance also knocked a home run and Storm scored the maximum six.

Storm shut out Surge in the second and then added for more, concluding with Rene hitting another opposite field home run off the end of the bat. He had two home runs and four RBI in his first two plate appearances.

A leadoff walk to the last batter in Surge’s order led to a surge in offence from Surge as the next batter hit a two run home run, and Surge surged back into the game with a six run mercy inning of their own.

Storm scored the maximum six in the fourth with Rene having to keep the ball in the park and extended their lead beyond the reach of any power Surge had to offer.

There was some solid defence near the end of the game. Duran made a great leaping catch on a ball that seemed like it was over his head.

Storm doubled Surge for a 24-12 win.

New player watch: Ken did not show up and did not sign out. Curious to see how Lance will deal with that in his next lineup. Especially since Ken was his pick-a-friend. And Adam made his debut. In his first two at bats he only had a 33% contact rate, but you only have to make contact once and he got a hit and drove in a run on his first at bat!

Notable Boxscores:

Rene - 4 for 4, 2 HR's, 3 runs, 5 RBI

Al - 4 for 4, 2B, 4 runs, 1 RBI

Duran - 3 for 5, 3B, 4 runs, 2 RBI

Lance - 2 for 4, 2B, HR, 2 runs, 3 RBI

Brad - 3 for 4, 2 runs, 2 RBI

A’s Wrinkle in Time

Storm started the season with a game that resembles a lot of their games. There was some good hitting, some good defence, and some…not so good defence.

There was apparently some rust on the bats that had to be shaken off. Storm struggled to hit through the first few innings, but Rene woke everyone up with a three run home run. He hit  a second home run that just skimmed over the left field fence. Lance launched a three run home run in the 5th. Ken welcomed himself to the team by launching a home run and lamenting the small ballpark. He now has more home runs in his first game than nine players hit combined last season.

On the bases, Storm had highs and lows. Duran must be slowed down by the lack of sleep from the new baby, because, while he hit well, he got three singles. Storm is accustomed to getting three bases on one hit from Duran, not three separate hits. And speaking of speed, Mills left his mark on the basepaths as he turned a single into a double before anyone had noticed, and arrived at third after tagging on a fly ball before the coach had a chance to tell him to advance. Lance also turned a single into a double, but that was more through stealth than speed. At the opposite end of the spectrum, there were some interesting slide attempts including Al bouncing into a base.

Defensively there were some good plays, most notable a great catch from Lance in the outfield. There were also a lot of hard hit balls that left bruises on the Storm defenders’ bodies and egos. One memorable moment had Kevin tracking a ball before falling to the ground as the ball skipped away. He went down so hard people were looking to the grassy knoll to find the sniper.

It was a memorable game, but one that Storm unfortunately came up short in. After reclaiming the lead in the 5th, Storm gave up seven runs in the top of the 7th. They came up to bat with three minutes left before the time limit. But time is a mysterious thing and seems to move at a different pace depending on your stage of life and role in the game. After scoring two and having the tying runs on base, Storm recorded the third out before the time officially ran out and fell to the A’s.

2022 Season a week away

A new season is about to commence, a few old faces will not be returning this year, but luckily Al our longest tenured player has decided to come back for at least one more season. We also have three new additions this year. Ken has over 30 years of experience playing slo-pitch and will be a nice addition to the team and the beer circle, Stephen joins our team and brings an abundance of speed to the Storm something we can always use, and Adam also joined the Storm this year after being away from the game for a few years. We look forward to getting to know all our new teammates.

We are starting this season three weeks later than normal, but so far with the weather we have had this spring that's a good thing, I'm so looking forward to some nice consistent warm day's/night's ahead.

I have updated the Storm website to include our sign-out page and our calendar page. Please sign out of all games that you know you will be missing this summer.

We will not be doing a drink schedule this year, so everyone is responsible for there own post game beverages, We have had a few practices, with one more scheduled this week. Team BBQ's, or possibly a Pool Party! will be determined later this spring.

So feel free to reach out if you have any questions, or you need to sign-out of a game or 10.

Here's to a great season ahead, for the most experienced team in the league!
