Storm Weather the Surge: Storm Survive 7th-Inning to Win 13-12

The Storm survived a furious late-game rally by the Sunbelt Surge to secure a thrilling 13-12 victory. It was characterized by massive explosive innings, high-percentage hitting, and dramatic lead changes.

The Sunbelt Surge wasted no time establishing dominance in the top of the first inning as Surge exploded for five quick runs. However, the Storm answered immediately in the bottom of the second, anchored by Mills’ early power surge—including a home run and a team-high four RBIs, the Storm unleashed a massive six-run counter-attack to snatch a 7-5 lead.

A true back-and-forth battle ensued. The Surge clawed back with a run in the third, but the Storm extended their cushion by plating two runs in the fourth and four more in the fifth. This late-game push gave the Storm a seemingly commanding 13-9 advantage heading into the final frame. The Storm offense hit an impressive .553 as a team, led by Joey's perfect 4-for-4 performance and Duran's two doubles.

Down to their final three outs in the top of the seventh, the Surge mounted a spectacular final comeback. They aggressively sequenced hits to push three runs across the plate, narrowing the deficit to just one. With the tying run in scoring position, the Storm defense finally locked down the final out to secure the 13-12 win, leaving the Surge just short of forcing extra innings.

Joey — The Offensive Engine

• Stat Line: 4-for-4, 2 Singles, 2 Doubles, 3 Runs, 4 RBIs, 2.500 OPS
• Why He’s #1: Pilkey put together a flawless "perfect game" at the plate, reaching base safely in all four appearances. He maximized his impact by driving in four runs and scoring three himself, meaning he was directly involved in over half of the team's 12 total runs.

Mills — The Power Source

• Stat Line: 1-for-4, 1 Home Run, 2 Runs, 4 RBIs, 1.750 OPS
• Why He’s #2: Mills provided the ultimate modern-baseball value by clearing the fences. His early home run anchored the Surge's initial 5-run explosion, and his team-high four RBIs kept the pressure heavily on the Storm pitching staff all afternoon.

Duran & Bob — The Table Setters

• Duran Spray: 2-for-4, 2 Doubles, 3 Runs, 2 RBIs, 1.500 OPS
• Bob Peppler: 3-for-4, 2 Singles, 1 Double, 1 Run, 2 RBIs, 1.750 OPS
• Why They’re #3: These two are tied for a vital role in the lineup. Spray delivered elite extra-base power with two doubles and scored three times, while Peppler raked three hits of his own to consistently turn over the lineup and put runners in scoring position.

A fourth straight comeback victory for the Strom

Storm relied on power surges against Surge. The first power surge came in the first with Sam hitting a two run blast and Storm scoring four runs to lead 4-3. Brad completely lost the strike zone in the second and when he found it Surge had a power surge of their own, scoring six and taking a 9-4 lead. 

Storm failed to score again until the fourth, when they had their second power surge of the game. Storm scored a max six off of singles and walks and took a 10-9 lead. The lead didn’t last long as Surge scored two in the fifth to take an 11-10 lead. In the sixth, Storm finally managed to throw Tommy a strike after two consecutive four pitch walks. This might have been a turning point as Storm then remembered how to hit, scoring 12 runs in the top of the seventh inning. Duran, Bob, and Jeff all scored twice in the inning. They score more runs in the seventh than they had in the first six innings. The final power surge was massive and more than enough to give Storm a 22-11 win.

Storm over Surge

With Captain Underpants in the stands, Storm’s pitchers were inspired by the mere presence of the premier pitcher of Storm’s history, and the three of them combined to give up only six runs across seven innings. 

The defense was strong. The only question mark was hitting, as Storm only scored twelve runs in seven innings. It was good enough on this night, but a dozen is good for doughnuts, not softball scores. Storm will likely have to do better in the future.

Storm holds off Surge

 Storms bats were strong (as was the wind) against Surge on Tuesday night. The question was, would the pitching hold up?

Storm only allowed three runs on (miracle of miracles) no walks in the first and then the bats got to work. Duran launched his first of three home runs in the first, and Storm managed the mercy. 

Surge surged in the second scoring four and taking the lead right back. It would last long as Storm scored three to regain the lead. Duran didn’t hit a home run in the second. You wouldn’t think that would be news, but on this night, with the wind blowing out, it was.

Surge scored two to tie it in the top of the third, but Storm had more thunder in their bats. And a little grease lightning. The third started with Shawn somehow hitting the ball and letting go of the bat. The bat made it farther than the ball and Surge recorded the first out of the inning. After that Storm kept the bats in their hands and the balls went flying, and when Duran batted, another ball flew over the fence. Storm scored six and took a 15-9 lead.

Storm made a pitching change as Captain Kangaroo decided he wanted to fill the shoes (or underpants) of our dearly departed Al Stanfield (he’s retired, not dead). Captain Kangaroo pitched a solid frame but lost his zero ERA as Surge scored three to keep it a tight contest.

Storm kept the thunder rolling and scored five in the fourth. They also started looking for Chewbacca, as Han Solo was definitely present. Duran knocked his third home run of the night. Greedy in multiple ways. It was a solo home run, and did he pass kindergarten? Sharing is caring. Storm led 20-12.

Surge was blanked in the fifth and it looked like Storm was going to pull away, but then…they stopped scoring as well. Jeff hit a home run, but that was just an out because of the events of the previous paragraph, so… Surge started chipping away at the lead scoring three in the sixth and three in the seventh before Captain Kangaroo closed the door. Storm held on to win 20-18. 

Storm has now given up 65 runs in four games to average 16.25 runs against per game. Last season, they averaged 10.7 runs against per game. It could be an interesting season.

Strap in as Hurricane Al provided a tidal wave of RBI’s!

Greetings sports fans Scoops Jokovitch here, intrepid sports reporter with you recap of a hot a dry game that is full of weather puns!

In a showdown that rained homeruns, the Storm "blew" away the competition, leaving the Surge with more than just a drizzle of regret. The first inning saw the Storm strike with a "thunderous" 6 runs, while the Surge could only "precipitate" 3 in return—talk about a "storm surge!"

The second inning was a "light drizzle" in comparison, with the Storm adding just 1 more to their "cloudy" collection while the Surge was left high and dry with nothing but "clear skies."

In the third inning, the Storm "rained down" another 6, but the Surge wasn't about to "throw in the towel" just yet, answering back with a "steady stream" of 4. It was a "waterlogged" inning for sure!

The fourth inning was a "torrential" affair, with the Storm pouring on 5 more runs. The Surge, however, had a bit of "lightning in a bottle" and sparked a 6-run rally of their own, making it a real "whirlwind" of an inning.

But by the fifth inning, the Storm decided to "reign" supreme, "flooding" the scoreboard with 4 more runs, while the Surge's momentum "trickled down" to just 2.

The final inning saw the Storm add another tsunami with 5 more runs, while the Surge was left "high and dry," unable to add a single drop. In the end, the Storm washed away the competition with a "monsoon" of 27 runs to the Surge's 15.

It was a game where the Storm proved they were the real "force of nature," leaving the Surge to "weather the aftermath."

Hi-lites included: A monster day of  8 RBI’s for Captain Underpants and a monster of a HR by a very angry Roberto!

Lo-Lites – A K for the Prez, A costly fielding error for a rookie SS and Dr. Suess unable to hit a cut-off man.

The Blistered Juggler

Greetings sports fans, it’s your favourite intrepid sports reporter Scoops Jockovitch here, reporting on the latest athletic endeavours of your favourite Whitby Men’s slo-pitch team named after a climatological event.

It was a muggy, buggy night as the battle of the 2 “S” teams faced off on the dusty diamond of destiny!

In the 1st Surge came out slugging like my drunken father to score 3.

The newly attired Storm replied like my favourite bartender with a double shot of 3’s to lead 6-3.

The 2nd inning saw many mosquito bites and a goose egg for the fashionable French men (Serge)

The less orange Stormies matched their 1st inning output with another 6 to start ( like my 3rd wife) pulling away, with a 12-3 lead.

 

Just to appease everyone’s short attention span the Cloudy ones went on to a comfortable win, 26-9.

 

But we know we’re all here to review and comment on some of the games highlites and more importantly (like my second wife) to make fun of the foibles, faults and f*ck-ups.

 

Rene (The Lips), after returning from a very successful fishing trip in the magical land of scorching sun called Saskamatoon had an eventful game.

Not only were his scorched, blistered lips offensive but so was he with 5 RBI’s, including 2 HR’s. On the downside, there was one play that the Storms first baseman must have thought that Rene’s blistered visage was so horrific that he turned his back to the scab faced third baseman instead of facing him to receive a throw, allowing the Electric companies batter to end up on 2nd.

 In defence of the Highlander on first, he did think The Lips had caught the line drive and had zoned out before realizing that the ball had popped out of his glove like an oozing pustule.

 

General (the Juggler) Mills also stood out in this game for both his rapid feet and hands.

Feet – A short pop-up behind second base was called for and easily caught by the General even before the Sloth at second had barely moved a step.

However, on a deep ball to right centre the Juggler appeared as the ball dropped into and out of and into and out of and finally into the frantic hands of the General for a very exciting, testicle-tightening out.
