Storm stumbles at start… and finish

In the first game of the double-header, Storm thought it was playing hardball. At least that’s the way their offense was producing. In the first four innings, Storm had five hits, two walks, and one run. If Storm were the Jays facing Justin Verlander, you could be pretty happy with the results; however, this isn’t major league baseball, this is recreational slo-pitch, and in recreational slo-pitch, you need to hit the ball.

Coulas didn’t seem to have any trouble hitting the ball. They scored six in the first, and two more in the second. The only reason they didn’t score in the 3^rd was because they hit two home run outs. It wasn’t until the 5^th that Storm started scoring. The top of the order strung together four straight hits driving in five runs.

Storm went back to their hitless ways in the 6^th, but in the top of the 7^th down 11-6, Storm turned it on. Brad and Bob got hits, the Duran tripled. Joey then hit a two-run homer pulling Storm to within one. Lance singled, but then the 2^nd out of the inning was made. Down one run, Kevin hit a double, driving in Lance and tying the game. Jeff came up with two outs and he game tied. He hit one over the left field fence to put Storm up two. All they had to do was keep Coulas off the scoreboard. Then, Storm’s defense sprung a little leak. A few plays that could have been made, a ball sneaking by an outfielder that allowed runners to advance and take runners out of force plays, and some timely hitting allowed Coulas to come back and sneak ahead of Storm 14-13.

Storm managed only 6 extra base hits in the game. Great if you’re facing DeGrom, but not in slo-pitch.

Storm shuts out Brew Crew

 Storm had a solid night defensively, not giving any extra outs, and Mike’s pitching was pinpoint as Storm was able to shutout Brew Crew.

Oh, yeah. And the team hit pretty well, too. They scored 27 runs with just two home runs. It was a solid effort top to bottom. As a matter of fact, Mike, batting last, went 6-6. Duran hit for the cycle, and Joey was just a triple short of the cycle, much like he was a triple short of a double cycle in a previous game.

You hit too many cycles when it’s something to get out of the way.

Next up, a doubleheader against Coulas and Broadway, who they’ll be playing for the fifth time in two weeks!

Storm avoids four losses to Broadway in one week…. with a tie

Storm was a little shorthanded, but put in a decent effort. With only three outfielders, the outfield was not a problem in the 17-17 tie to Broadway.

With Joey moved to centre, Jeff slid over to shortstop. The first couple of innings were a little rough for him as one ground ball took a big hop and hit his chest, then another stayed right down and got through his legs. The extra outs in the first two innings would help Broadway jump out to a 7-0 lead. It looked like it was going to be a runaway, but Storm stormed back with a three-run 3^rd and an 11- run 4^th. Unfortunately, Storm could not hold onto that lead as Broadway scored 7 in the top of the 5^th.

The seesaw scoreboard continued as Storm scored three in the 6^th and Broadway scored 2 in the top of the 7^th. With Brad, the go-ahead run at 3^rd, Broadway walked Duran and Joey to load the bases creating a force at the plate. Lance then lifted a shallow fly ball to left to bring Jeff to the plate. After taking three straight balls to start the at-bat, Brad put one off the back of the board. The next pitch was right in there and Jeff it a sharp line drive to left field… that was caught. Game over. Tie game.

WMSPL Tournament Wrap-up

The mid-season tournament started and ended in the same way… with losses to Broadway. 

Storm would like to thank Doug and George from the A’s for filling in for some of the empty roster spots left by Storm players playing golf and watching dance recitals among other things.

Game 1 - Friday 9:30 vs Broadway

Broadway defeated Storm in the first game. This put Storm into must win baseball the rest of the tourney. And they made it a little harder than it needed to be.

Game 2 - Saturday 9:00am vs Falcons

Storm defeated the Falcons, but a solo homerun negated a grand slam later in the game.

Game 3 - Saturday 12:00pm vs ReMax

Re/Max Crossroads played Storm tight, and Storm needed to go to its last at bats to take the lead, and then score a few more so they were the plus seven they could potentially have needed had it come down to run-differential.

Final - Saturday 3:00pm vs Broadway

But Storm ran out of steam in the final game and Broadway was back to being Storm’s nemesis, as they defeated them for the 2^nd time in the tourney and the third time in the week.
